Obfuscation and virtualization: costs, benefits and known weak spots
Packers and code virtualization raise the time needed for analysis, paid for in performance, size and antivirus false positives. Wrap the parts that matter instead of wrapping everything.
What they do
- Obfuscation: renaming, fake branches, encrypted strings. Cheap, hurts static reading.
- Packers: compress and encrypt the file, unpack at run time. Stops quick static analysis.
- Code virtualization: translates chosen functions into a private instruction set run by a tiny VM. The costliest to reverse.
The price
- Slower execution, especially for virtualized code.
- Bigger files and slower start-up.
- Antivirus often flags packed files: sign your binaries and submit samples to vendors.
Where to wrap
Wrap SDK initialisation, the code that handles license answers and code that uses secret variables. Do not wrap hot loops or UI.
Known weak spots
Memory after unpacking can still be dumped. Virtualization only protects the chosen functions. No tool replaces letting the server decide.
With ClavisAUH
Add Code Obfuscation through the Protection Kit to make SDK calls harder to read, together with Response Signing and Server-Side Enforcement.
